2024 AOH Patrick Ryan Division Picnic & Hat Party - July 28, 2024
Thursday - July 25, 2024 - Annual AOH Patrick Ryan Division Family Picnic!
Brothers,
Hello. This is a friendly reminder that the annual Ryan Division Picnic & Hat Party is this Sunday, July 28th, from noon till 4pm, at our meeting place, the KofC Hall in Plymouth.
Bring your own picnic food and beer/wine/sprits. The division will provide pop, water, ice and snacks.
Most people bring fried chicken, Chinese or Mexican food, but you can bring whatever you want.
There is no need to bring a dish to share and there is no cost to attend.
This is also a "HAT PARTY". You can wear any hat that you want, but if you don't have any hats, that is not a reason to miss this event. Old hats, work hats, baseball caps, military hats/helmets, etc. They options are endless, and everyone gets to enjoy the different hats.
Everyone is invited. This includes family, friends, neighbors and potential new members.
Hope you can spend a few hours on Sunday afternoon with your fellow Hibernians.
Slainte!

Monday - July 10, 2023 - A message from our President, Tim Higgins...
Brothers,
I hope that everyone had a Happy & Safe Independence Day Weekend.
Since the last meeting we held our second "Dinner Out" at "The Crow's Nest" on Canton Center Road in Canton. We had eighteen brothers and their wives, family and friends attend. Special thanks to John & Cheryl McInerney and Dan & Pat Suggs who showed up early to help hold tables in the same area since The Crow's Nest would not take reservations. Turns out that we had four tables of six all right next to each other. It was grand. And the food & beverages were very good too. We'll do this again in September so keep your antenna up for news of where we will be going.
Our big summer event is the AOH/LAOH Michigan Convention. It is 28 & 29 July 2023, at the Gateway Hotel in Flint. 5353 Gateway Centre Blvd., Flint, MI 48507. The hotel offers two queen bed rooms for $109 per night. King bed w sofa are $99 per night. Both are plus tax. When you call the hotel, be sure to ask for the AOH/LAOH room rate. The Hotel's phone number is 810.232.5300.
The AOH Convention complete package is only $135. More information to follow on the convention package. As in the past, the Major Degrees will be offered at this year's convention. See below.
The AOH Major Degree Team will be here from Ohio. Because of the pandemic, this is the first time they have been to our AOH Michigan Convention in four years. As before, any brother who has not received the Major Degrees and taken the Text of our Order, are encouraged to do so. The Major Degrees will be at at 2pm, on Saturday, July 29th. The cost is #30, but is 100% reimbursable by the Ryan Division one you've received your Major Degrees. Those of us, who have already received our Major Degrees, are encouraged to observe the Degree Team conduct the ritual and confer the Major Degrees of our Order. I always make to to observe the Major Degrees at every State or National Convention I attend.
Our AOH Ryan Division Annual Picnic and Hat Party will be on Sunday, July 30th, 2023 at our meeting location, the KofC Renaud Hall, 150 Fair St., Plymouth, MI 48170. Remember to bring all those unique and different hats, or just one of your favorites.
I hope to see most of you at Tuesday's meeting.
Remember, this is your club, let's live up to our motto and have fun doing it.

Thursday - September 1, 2022 - About Michael Collins... (this excerpt courtesy of AOH National History Bulletin)
Béal na Bláth, 100 Years On
Easter Monday 1916, found twenty-five year old Michael Collins at the General Post Office, serving as aide-de-camp to Easter Proclamation signatory Joseph Plunkett. A mile or so to the east, Volunteers under the command of thirty-three year old Éamon de Valera occupied Boland’s Mills and other key positions surrounding the Grand Canal Dock. By week’s end, the Rising was over and both men were in British custody, Collins marched away with the surviving GPO garrison and De Valera famously the last to comply with Pearse’s surrender order. De Valera, initially on the British short list of execution candidates, would live to the ripe old age of 92, dying in 1972 after dominating Irish politics for decades.
Collins, virtually unknown to the British in 1916, would survive the War of Independence as the most wanted man in Ireland, only to die at the hands of his countrymen six years after the Rising.
Collins, the eighth child of a farming family in County Cork, was only 15 when he moved to London, living with his sister and taking a position as a “Boy Clerk” with the Postal Savings Bank. Collins became active in the GAA and became a member of Sinn Fein, the IRB and the London Volunteers. Collins returned to Ireland in January 1916 after almost ten years in London, with planning for the Rising well underway.
De Valera, a bespectacled mathematician and Irish language enthusiast, was born in New York Limerick native Catherine Coll and a mysterious Spanish father, from whom “Dev,” as he was later known, received his distinctive surname. Young Dev, raised by his grandmother in Limerick, became active in the Gaelic revival and then joined the Irish Volunteers and the IRB, rising in influence to the point that he warranted a command during the Rising.
Collins and De Valera emerged from separate British prisons in 1917 with the same purpose, each devoting their talents toward the establishment of an Irish republic. Dev became President of Sinn Fein at the convention of 1917, with Collins elected to the party Executive.
Both men were returned to the first Dáil Éireann in the Sinn Fein landslide of 1918. Later as De Valera, President of the Dáil, toured America raising money and support for the cause, Collins, Director of Intelligence of the IRA, brilliantly directed the war effort in Ireland.
Countless volumes have been written about what came next. De Valera sent Collins to London for negotiations that resulted in the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which Dev and “anti-Treaty” Sinn Fein/IRA members rejected. The ensuing Civil War pitted the “Big Fellow,” Collins against the “Tall Fellow” De Valera.
Collins was killed in an anti-Treaty ambush at a place called Béal na Bláth, some 20 miles from his birthplace on August 22, 1922. Collins’ “Free Staters,” later the Fine Gael party, won the Civil War, but De Valera reemerged in 1926 with a new party, Fianna Fáil and led governments from 1932-48; 1951-54 and 1957-73, after which he served as President from 1959-73.
Recriminations over the Civil War have resonated in Irish politics for a century, but time and circumstances may be having an ameliorative effect. When Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael entered into their first ever coalition government in 2020, under pressure from a resurgent Sinn Fein, incoming Fianna Fail Taoiseach Michael Martin asked his Fine Gael predecessor, Leo Varadekar, to leave the portrait of Michael Collins in the Taoiseach’s office, where today it hangs next to a portrait of De Valera, bringing the Big Fellow and the Tall Fellow, in a small way, together again.

Brothers,
After some hotly contested debate the Constitutional Amendment to remove the gender requirement for the AOH has be overwhelmingly defeated.
Only two states had their full complement of delegates or 100%. Those states were Virginia with 30 delegates and North Carolina with 21 delegates. Michigan had 4 of 23 delegates. We can do better.
We had seven Resolutions:
#1 AOH John Dearie Resolution: Recognizes John Dearie for the work he did getting then presidential candidate Bill Clinton to commit to giving a vista to Gerry Adams, then president of Sinn Fein, and to appoint a special envoy for Northern Ireland. Both of these things happened ultimately resulting in the Good Friday Agreement. PASSED.
#2, FFAI Legacy. Getting the American and Irish governments to support suing the UK in European Court if they grant amnesty to those having committed murder of Irish Catholics in Northern Ireland. PASSED.
#3, Supporting the creation of an All Ireland Citizens Assembly to hear the concerns of all people living on the island of Ireland. PASSED.
#4, Social Media Anti-Bullying Resolution. Friendly amendment to oppose all forms of bullying. PASSED.
#5, Condemn domestic Violence Resolution. Includes a requirement that the Pledge to Oppose Domestic Violence be administered to each division as soon as possible. PASSED
#6, Support of Ukraine in their defense against unprovoked Russian attack. PASSED.
#7, Support for the Medal of Freedom being awarded to Jan Scruggs. PASSED.
Constitutional amendments besides the one on gender:
* Rewrite of the National Historian's duties. PASSED.
* Changing National Dues from $12 to $24 per year. Hotly debated. Proposer accepted a friendly amendment to change the increase to $20 and not $24. Will take effect with the Per-Capita due 15 Feb 2024. PASSED. As a note, I did not see this one coming because we National had recently increased our Per-Capita in the last few years. Again, this won't become effective until the dues payable on 15 Feb 2024.
* New Award: Human Dignity Award. PASSED.
* Name for new award; Father Edward J. Flanagan (founder of Boys Town). PASSED.
* Article XXX: Founders Day; Removes Founders Day and the requirement to report to the LAOH.
* Article X; Oversight Committee; removes reference to the credit card program. Spells out exactly what the Oversight Committee is responsible for. States that the Oversight Committee does not replace the Audit Committee but only prepares accounts for Audit Committee review.
Attended the Major Degree exemplification by the three year old Allegany Major Degree Team. This was only their sixth exemplification. they had 54 brothers take the major degrees and pass the test of the Order. There had to be an estimated 100 plus degreed brothers there to witness the ritual and test of the Order.
Please know that this is not intended to be a comprehensive review of the convention, but only a summary of what I believe is important or that the membership would like to know about.
Yours in Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity.

Thursday - March 10, 2022 - A message from AOH Ryan Division President Tim Higgins...
Brothers,
The St. Patrick's Parade is upon us!! See the email below and the attachments from the Parade Company for details. Tom Kish and I will attend the mandatory meeting tonight so we will have representation.
All AOH Divisions are in the Fifth Parade Division. We will assemble at the corner of Abbott and Sixth Street not far from Most Holy Trinity by 1pm on Sunday, 13 March 2022. This year, the Ryan Division will march directly behind the AOH Michigan State Board. This has never happened before in the 20 years I've attended the parade.
My CHALLENGE TO ALL OF YOU; if you've not been to the parade in the past three five years, I want you to join us and march in the parade.
If only half our membership came, and half of them brings a friend or relative, we will have 45 people march with the Ryan Division. Imagine that! Let's make that happen. It's up to you.
For those who want to; some of us meet each year at the Red Olive on Ann Arbor Road in Plymouth at 8am on Parade Day morning for breakfast and fellowship. Afterwards, we travel to the Gaelic League ($10 cover if not a member) and then enjoy ourselves until it's time to move to the assembly area by Most Holy Trinity.
Slainte.
Yours in Friendship, Unit and Christian Charity.

Brothers,

Brothers,
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing our long time Hibernian Brother and Friend, Mark Gunn. Mark was a long time Marshal of the Ryan Division insuring that our meeting place was always configured according to Hibernian ritual.
Mark was always there to help out during Irish baked good sales at the Detroit Feis, putting food packs together during the annual Kids Against Hunger event each May, and marching with the Ryan Division in the Detroit St. Patrick's Parade each March. He was proud of his military service with the Field Artillery of the US Army where was was the "Chief of Smoke" for his Battery. He was also a good friend of mine. He will be missed.
Details of his passing and funeral services are unknown as I write this, but I'll be sure to inform you as details become available.
Please include Mark and the Gunn family in your prayers.

Brothers
This Pandemic of COVID 19 is still trying to raise its ugly head and made the positive case numbers in our state extremely high at this present time; however, with many of us receiving our second vaccine, maybe we will find many of these positive cases dropping. In any case, I hope this letter finds all of you and your families safe. Our President Mike Kelly has announced that we will have a State Board Meeting on Saturday, May 8th, 2021 in Grand Rapids. The meeting will take place at 11:00 am at Quinn & Tuites, 1535 Plainfield Ave, NE, Grand Rapids, Mi. The focus of this meeting will be a discussion about the State Convention.
Of course masks will be required and social distancing will be the order of the day while moving around. It is asked that all divisions try and send a representative to this meeting. If, in fact your division is unable to send a representative, it would be appreciated you answer this e-mail and let us know.

Brothers,
Welcome to October. The holidays and the end of the year are just around the corner. While the year is winding down, the COVID-19 pandemic goes on. Since we are at the start of the cold and flu season, it is best that our monthly meetings will continue be by Zoom for the time being. The login and password can be found in the top left corner of this newsletter and below in the body of this newsletter below. Our Zoom meeting will be at 7:30pm, this Tuesday, October 13th.
We Irish know that our Celtic ancestors celebrated the pagan holiday of Samhain, pronounced "Sow-win" which evolved into Halloween and All Saints Day. According to History.com, " Samhain was usually celebrated from October 31 to November 1 to welcome in the harvest and usher in “the dark half of the year.” Celebrants believe that the barriers between the physical world and the spirit world break down during Samhain, allowing more interaction between humans and denizens of the Otherworld.
Looming as large, or larger than the pandemic, is the 2020 Election. Please know that in accordance with our National Constitution, our Order does not support, or endorse, candidates for political office. Yes, everyone is encouraged to vote as it is our civic duty. All are encouraged to vote your conscience. With a bit of luck, we just may know who has won the presidential election by our meeting in November.
Speaking of elections, at our October Zoom meeting, we will open nominations for our officers for 2021. Everyone is encouraged to run for a division office. During the November meeting we will reopen nominations and conduct the election that night. Besides the officer positions, their are multiple chairmanships available. Questions, please speak to any of our current officers or myself.
Back on October 1st, I represented the Ryan Division at the first UIS meeting since last February. Since attendance was limited and subject to COVID restrictions, no items were voted on or major decisions made. It does look like at the next UIS meeting on October 15th, the UIS will vote to keep the same parade theme, Grand Marshal, etc. Other items are still up in the air, such as, how to handle the thousands of Parade Times that were printed but never distributed, as well, deciding on a deadline to make the decision to cancel the 2021 parade if that becomes necessary. As of the meeting on Oct 1st, that date will be either November 15th or December 15th. Those who want to attend the UIS meeting on October 15th at Monaghan KofC, please let me know.
During this month's meeting, I will open the floor for the first of two presentations (Oct and Nov) in support of other charities that we have not supported this year. Please see the deals in the body of this newsletter below.
Lastly, the membership will discuss this year's Christmas Party. Do we want to have one? If you can't be on the Zoom call for this discussion, please do respond to this email and let me know what your thoughts are on this important subject.
Remember, this is your club, so when this COVID-19 pandemic is behind us (and it to will pass), let's live up to our motto and have fun doing it.
Stay Safe.

Our Annual Picnic and Hat Party will be at the KofC Hall in Plymouth, from noon till 4pm, NEXT Saturday, August 15th!! Because of COVID-19 concerns, everyone is asked to "bring your own picnic" food. This will eliminate the need to share serving utensils. Everyone is encouraged to social distance and wear masks. Also, bring your own lawn chairs if you want to sit outside. The division will provide individual bottles of water and pop, so again, there will be no need to share. PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL TO LET ME KNOW THAT YOU PLAN TO ATTEND AND HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE WITH YOU.

Brothers,
Our first attempt at a video meeting has been peppered in technical difficulties.
The May meeting has been rescheduled to next Tuesday, May 19th, at the same time, 7:30pm. This is a week from tonight.
The conference ID is unchanged: XXX XXX XXXX.
However, the meeting password is different by one letter. The correct pass word is: XXXXXX You'll noticed that the second to last letter is a "b" and not a "d".
I apologize for this issue.
Thank you for your understanding.

Hello Brothers,
Our next fundraiser for our charity donations is Sept 26 - 29 (Thursday - Sunday) at Vision Lanes located at 38250 Ford Road near John Hix in Westland. It's only 3 weeks away!!
I hope you can schedule your time to help with a shift or two. Please review the information at the end of this note and let me know. Many thanks to Frank Bernacki, Bill Brang, Mark Conroy, Mark Gunn, Tim Higgins, Joe Kelly, Tom Kish, Sam Kennedy, John McInerney, Tim Dougan, Tab Morin and Rick St. Peter who have agreed to support a shift. A special thanks to Bill and John for supporting 2 shifts. Your support is much appreciated.
Note that Saturday and Sunday only have 3 of 12 shifts supported so please allocate your time for these openings. It is surprising there is a lack of support since most of you are not working during the weekend in the evening. I understand weekend social activities can conflict, but I hope some of you can please find a way to support these shifts.
You’ll get a 6 month break from my requests for this fundraising support until our next one scheduled in March 2020 (Spring!!), so I hope you have 4 hours or more for this important event.
Thanks in advance for your support to help raise funds for our charities.. Remember this is also an opportunity to spend some time with your brothers for a very good cause.
In Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity,
Mike

Brothers,
Our annual AOH Hat Party & Ryan Division Picnic, is THIS Saturday, noon to 5pm, August 24th. At our regular meeting location, the KofC Hall in Plymouth at 150 Fair Street by the Rail Road Crossing on Lilley Rd.
New this year is that this will be a BYOB event like the Christmas Party.
We ask that that everyone bring a side dish or dessert to share in addition to your own favorite beer, wine and or spirit. The main food items will be provided by Laurel Manor Catering and will include chicken & sausage with peppers. The Ryan Division will provide water, pop, chips, paper products, plates, cups and plastic-ware.
We have a great time so don't miss it. Please feel free to invite guests and to bring your family.
Don’t forget to bring your favorite hats to show everyone. You can bring more than one hat, I do.
Scroll down the page here a bit to see a few photos from last year's Hat Party & Picnic.

Ryan Division Brothers,
The Greater Plymouth / Canton Service Project will be upon us in only 9 Days!!.
IT IS A WEEK FROM THIS SATURDAY on May 11th at the PARC in Plymouth. Plan on meeting at 10am, we start at 10:30am.
It's time to live up to the CHARITY portion of our great motto. We are on the second shift. Because parking is at a premium, plan on being there around 10am. We'll meet in the auditorium. Wear your Ryan shirts (or anything Irish).
This year WE WILL HAVE THREE "AOH & LAOH" TEAMS!! This is thanks to the ladies of the Fagan and Trinity Divisions who are turning out to help us officially this year. This fulfills the UNITY portion of our great motto.
Yes, you can bring friends & family to this event. Afterwords, those who want to, will meet at the ROC on Ann Arbor Road (by Lee's Chicken) in Plymouth for lunch.
May of us have worked this event the past few years, and dare I say, it's a lot of fun too!!
It's not too late to help out. Questions, do respond to this email.

Sunday - March 17, 2019 - HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY! A regular tradition in Detroit on St. Patrick's Day is the annual "Sharin' of the Green" Mass at Most Holy Trinity Church in Corktown. The Archbishop of Detroit Allen Vigneron, or one of his auxiliary bishops always celebrates the Mass and many Detroit and State of Michigan politicians and dignitaries are regular attendees. Part of the tradition is that the Archbishop will be escorted into and out of church by the AOH Hibernian Riffles. It was not different today. The archbishop was kind enough to pose for a picture with the Riffle after Mass. We are happy to say that two of the AOH Hibernian Riffles present today are members of Patrick Ryan Division! Mike Riley (second from the right) and Bob Yancey (second from the left) are looking pretty good in their authentic civil war era uniforms!
Monday - March 15, 2019 - Yup! That’s AOH Patrick Ryan Division marching in last weekend’s Detroit St. Patrick’s Parade! Pictured from L to R: Dan Darnel, Kevin Dunn, Mark Gunn, Katie Higgins, Mike Rouhan, Rick St.Peter, Tom Kish, Brandon Guziatek (Mark's grandson). Not it the photo but marching in the parade were: Kevin Burke (President AOH State Board), Patrick Sturdy (Past AOH SB President), Mike Riley and Tim Higgins.
Monday - March 11, 2019 - Despite the weather not completely cooperating (cold, windy, rainy), Patrick Ryan Division and many Irish faithful were out celebrating Irish Heritage at the Detroit St. Patrick's Parade yesterday in Detroit. Congrats again to Paul & Agnes Gowdy for being selected as the Grand Marshals of the 2019 parade!
Thursday - January 24, 2019 - Last weekend was the annual "March for Life" in Washington D.C. Many thousand pro-life supporters again marched in support of life and against the culture of death that the 1973 Roe v Wade supreme court decision has brought upon this country. We are proud to have had two representatives from our division there...Steve Monaghan and his daughter Brianna. They are pictured below. Note that Steve is wearing his AOH Patrick Ryan Division sash!
Saturday - January 12, 2019 - AOH Patrick Ryan Division enjoyed a fun family evening out for dinner and a hockey game tonight. We do this annually, so if you missed this year's event, plan on joining in on the fun next year! Note all the smiling faces in these pics!
Thanks to brother Joe Kelly for the photos.

Brothers,
Our Oct 31 – Nov 3 fundraiser at Players raised a significant amount for our charities. I was pleased with our results considering the first night was Halloween and this location just opened in early September. There was negligible blackjack and 2 cash game tables most of the time.
The support of the following brothers was much appreciated for this successful event: Kevin Burke, Mark Gunn, Joe Kelly, Tom Kish, John Knorp, Bill Brang, Rick St. Peter, Frank Bernacki, Tab Morin, Steve White, Dan Riley, Sam Kennedy, Patrick Sanders, John McInerney (2), Tim Higgins (2), Paul Curran, Tim Dougan, Jim Inch (2), Dan Suggs and Mike Riley (2). The number in parenthesis indicates those brothers who supported more than 1 shift. A special thanks to Jim Inch who volunteered to work a few hours before the start of a shift when a brother became ill.
Our next fundraiser is at Vision Lanes in Westland scheduled for May 30 – June 2.. I hope many of you will be available.
THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

Brothers - As we approach the end of the year, it's time to recognize that 2019 division dues should be paid by December 31st. You can pay your dues at our November 13th (or December 11th) meetings or mail them to me at the following address:

Make checks payable to AOH Ryan Division. Dues are $40 (or $35 if you are retired). Priests are exempt from paying dues as are Associate members. Once I receive your dues payment and I receive our 2018 membership cards from AOH National (around mid December), I will send you your membership card.
If you are a US military veteran and that status was not recognized on your 2018 membership card, let me know what branch you served in and that status will be indicated on your 2019 card.
Any questions, let me know. Thank you!

Thank you!

Brother Division, County and State Officers,
Last Call. The Major Degrees will be offered at 1:30pm on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at the Convention Hotel, the Embassy Suites in Livonia. You can arrive with current membership card, plus $30, and receive your Major Degrees Saturday afternoon.
LET YOUR MEMBERSHIP KNOW THIS. ORGANIZE A CAR POOL IF NECESSARY!
Embassy Suites
19525 Victor Parkway
Livonia, MI 48152
Those without the Major Degrees should take this, once every two year, opportunity to receive the Major Degrees without having to attend a National Convention. You must have received your Major Degrees to serve as a Division President or Division Vice Present, and all officer positions at County and State level.
The cost is $30 and most divisions will reimburse this fee once a brother has received the Major Degrees. For those of us who have the Major Degrees, it's a great opportunity to observe the ceremony. If you have not observed before, it's a great way to reinforce the lessons of our great Order. Also, this is no cost to observe, but you must have your membership card with the Major Degree date printed on it.

Friday - December 16, 2016 - In November, Patrick Ryan Division contributed $500 each to seminarians Robert Kilner and Mark Livingston, who both are nephews of division members.
Robert is a member and unofficial chaplain of an AOH division in Washington DC. He graduated from the Catholic University of America in 2010. He went to the Pontifical North American College in Rome studying theology for the past three years. He is assigned to a parish in the Archdiocese of Washington DC and will be ordained a priest in 2017.
Mark is serving a pastoral assignment at Our Lady of Sorrows church in Farmington, MI now and will pursue his education next semester. He will be ordained a deacon in 2017 and a priest at Detroit Sacred Heart Major Seminary in 2018.
Ryan Division has contributed to Project St. Patrick several times in the past and expects to contribute more in the future. It was decided to contribute directly to Mark and Robert because theirs is a personal relationship with division members and it was important to contribute now for their important education support.
